Rule 138

Subject: Situation in Western Sahara – ongoing crackdown
A statement issued today by the Polisario Front reports that, since last Friday, July 19, a wave of repression has been underway in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, especially in the capital El Aaiun.
Following the victory of the Algerian team in the African Cup of Nations, the Saharawi people took to the streets to celebrate the victory peacefully and claim the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people.
According to the statement, a crackdown by the Moroccan authorities was immediately initiated, using firearms, water cannons and other devices against the population. Cases of arbitrary detention, including minors, beatings and house-to-house raids are mentioned. In the early hours of July 20, a young Saharawi was reportedly hit by a vehicle from the Moroccan authorities, suffering injuries resulting in her death.
In the light of the situation described and the urgency of ending it, I ask:
- Are you aware of this situation? What immediate action do you intend to take to halt the ongoing repression and its consequences?
- Do you consider proposing the suspension of existing EU-Morocco agreements, taking into account the human rights clauses contained therein?
